 Thank you for detailed explanation.

 So since I do require gcc7 to build R, and you say gcc then has to be
 universal, I am running into the same problem with python27. I did add a
 line in a portfile, but when I invoke a call to upgrade gcc7 as universal,
 python27 starts downloading and fails to build.

 I used this command:

 sudo port -v upgrade --enforce-variants gcc7 +universal
