 Yeah... "we" typically save variants both specified by the user and
 default (i.e., implicit) variants, but the "default variants" change over
 time.

 However, we do not apply **new** "default variants" to existing
 installations, so users have to check **all** ports regarding their
 default variants and "upgrade" to the the new default variants manually.

 It's a bit difficult to explain (and our documentation regarding this is
 severely lacking, to the point of non-existent), but that's actually a
 pretty important point. We just don't advertize it properly.
