 Run

 sudo port edit gdal
 }}}

 scroll down to the section starting with


 {{{
 configure.args-append
 }}}


 and look for

 {{{
 --disable-driver-kmlsuperoverlay
 }}}

 delete this line, save the file, and try again.

 This worked for me.
