 as far as I can tell `waf.python.branch ${python.branch}` does not exist
 in that port, instead it is `waf.python_branch`. That variable is defined
 in the [https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/blob/eca924aec8b7bcc513a20cb22f4954fc68fabe60/_resources/port1.0/group/waf-1.0.tcl#L4
 waf PG] so to me this seems all good.
