 Akim, circling back on this, as we'd ideally like to have the tests
 compile and run using gcc-4.2 as well. And while not absolutely necessary
 - we worked around it by disabling tests by default, and requiring a newer
 GCC when those are enabled - that's not great either.

 Any thoughts?
