 I would like to sort out why it is just showing up now, here, after all
 these years before I ask any stupid questions upstream about it.

 Is legacysupport getting involved here anywhere? We saw some kind of issue
 with recursive paths involving legacysupport in libarchive, and we never
 really sorted that out.
