 I realize my frustration is showing :>

 There is a certain elegant beauty to simplicity. Have a look at the
 formula for mpich on Homebrew.

 Here's the Portfile I'm using on my systems to install mpich-default. It
 installs, with FORTAN support using MacPorts default compiler, with no
 fuss. (I have installed 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, and 10.14 so far).

 I haven't verified universal or just PowerPC yet.

 TBH, I can just wrap my head around this better.
