 To simplify dependent ports - and allow multiple Python versions to be
 supported side-by-side - migrate from Python variants to subports.

 Haven't had a chance to look too closely at this port just yet, but are
 there are any technical barriers/gotchas we need to be aware of? And are
 there any objections to such a change?

 I'll do the work, if the maintainers sign off on the idea.
