 You can install an x86_64 build of GCC 9 and run it through Rosetta 2, you
 just can't get a native arm64 build. As for why starting MacPorts with
 Rosetta 2 results in x86_64 builds, that's because MacPorts defaults to
 building for the arch that it is built as unless told differently via
 macports.conf, and the binary installer is universal so you can run
 MacPorts as either arch. This is touched on in
 BigSurProblems#Rosetta2andbuild_arch.
