 Same on two Tiger Intel systems, actually. One of them has dozens of fonts
 installed, and I thought that might be it, but the other one has zero
 fonts installed, and freeciv-sdl still shows nice text in the window.

 So -- it would not appear to be a problem with having a font missing that
 should be installed. All have libsdl_ttf installed, all have freetype
 installed.

 It's a mystery at present.
