 I am not certain it is a BigSur-specific problem, but I indeed cannot
 reproduce that issue on my system (10.15.7).

 It is just a guess, but if indeed the freeze happens even before
 initiating a search of a replace, this might be more of an interface
 problem than in the actual Kile code, considering that there is no
 automatic search to my knowledge.
