 I don't remember, but it looks like it would have been to avoid a name
 collision between the caught exception and the newly constructed one. This
 upstream commit would have fixed it: https://github.com/Tripwire/tripwire-
 open-source/commit/1d4ebe8ac288e521e721af7955b1eaea0c02ac9b
