 Attempting to build jq with the universal variant (on High Sierra) fails.
 main.log says:

 {{{
 :info:configure checking whether byte ordering is bigendian... universal
 :info:configure configure: error: universial endianess not supported
 }}}

 I guess using the muniversal portgroup might work around this.
