 An 8 year old Mac is not that old :-).  My newest Mac is a 2015 Macbook
 Pro which still runs great.

 But like you, I am hoping to buy a new silicon M-based Mac in the near
 future.  They appear to be a LOT faster which should help a lot with
 compiling times.  (It was painfully slow compiling gdal v3.3.1 on my 2006
 Mac Pro tower running Lion).  I am sure you will be very happy with the
 performance of your new M1 based Mac once it arrives.
