Comment (by foretspaisibles):

 I retried a clean build, yielding the same result. See attached file.
 Since I saw other tickets hinting at strange patterns in memory
 consumption I also took a look at the activity and monitor and top.

 It turns out that the first command in the build sequence

 {{{
   PID TTY           TIME CMD
   712 ttys000    9:12.18
 /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_macports_release_tarballs_ports_lang_sbcl/sbcl/work/sbcl-1.2.11-x86-64-darwin/src/runtime/sbcl
 --core
 /opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_macports_release_tarballs_ports_lang_sbcl/sbcl/work/sbcl-1.2.11-x86-64-darwin/output/sbcl.core
 --disable-debugger --sysinit /dev/null --userinit /dev/null
 }}}

 will run for almost 50 minutes on my system, slowly allocating memory
 until it is killed by the system after exhausting physical memory and
 swap. See attached screenshot.
