 It is possible to construct a much-pared-down version of gnutar, sort of
 "gnutar-bootstrap", that has a much lower burden of deps for
 installation... it might have had no deps, if I recall, or at least had
 very few, and nothing circular.

 I built such a version of gnutar a few months ago when I was considering
 how to solve this problem, but I can't at the moment locate it. But that
 path was fruitful, should anyone care to recreate that idea.
