 Could you elaborate?

 The [attachment:1001-makefile.patch first makefile patch], from Debian I
 guess, looks fine: it ensures that the Makefile doesn't overwrite CFLAGS
 that might be specified. It specifies optimization flags only if the user
 didn't specify CFLAGS, on the assumption that if the user is specifying
 CFLAGS they are including optimization flags.

 But your [attachment:1003-makefile.patch second makefile patch] appears to
 remove `-funroll-loops -frename-registers` if CFLAGS are specified by the
 user, and I don't understand why.
