 Ok, Ken; the second suggestion worked, and I installed librsvg +quartz.
 The port upgrade command built gegl, gtk2, py27-pygtk and gimp2.  Then I
 tried to launch /Applications/MacPorts/GIMP.app and the executable barfed,
 the first lines of the crash report being

 I can attach the whole crash report, if you need it.  Now I uninstalled -f
 gimp and gimp2, and I am currently reinstalling them.  I'll let you know
