Comment (by ballapete):

 On Leopard lines #672/673 contain:

 {{{
 # 277 "/usr/include/sys/cdefs.h" 3 4
 #define __DARWIN_UNIX03 1
 }}}

 which explains why on Leopard `-D__DARWIN_UNIX03` is not necessary.
