Comment (by ryandesign):

 The portion of the patch that changes /etc to /private/etc should only be
 applied within a `platform darwin` block.

 Please report these problems to the developers of sshuttle as well. They
 will probably want to find a more general solution to the problem. (Who
 knows if there are other operating systems where, like on macOS, /etc is a
 symlink.)
