Comment (by jmroot):

 Upgrading will only automatically add +universal if something else
 requires it. See `port -v installed dependentof:python310` to help figure
 out what that is.

 Can anyone test whether this also happens on other OS versions? And also
 whether `-lto` or `-optimizations` make any difference?
