 thanks for the report @wcvinyard, none of the tickets you mention are
 relevant here. The issue -as the error message- clearly states is that
 `py-spyder-kernels` requires a newer of `py-jupyter_client` than is
 currently available in MacPorts.

 @Andrew: is there a reason for not updating the port other than "I haven't
 had time for it yet". I am happy to take a look at it, but if would be
 good to know if there is an (obvious) reason not to do so.
