Comment (by kencu):

 For background…

Up to the present, MacPorts has been prepared to help support users with a
standard installation of {{{Xcode 3.2.6}}} building Intel ports on the
last release of 10.6.8. Many are against this policy and for good reasons,
 by the way.

x86_64 builds are still pretty reliable at present. i386 builds are
getting shaky due to minimal upstream testing on darwin, but there is
 desire to have it work.

ppc on 10.6.8 is totally unsupported, and completely untested by anyone
upstream or on MacPorts for that matter.

It would be “cool” if it worked, for sure. Modest PRs with patches to
support that might be considered by port maintainers. Not many, if any,
will actively try to fix such build errors, though.

If a user such as you interested it such unusual builds finds flaws in
MacPorts base or Portfile code that are manifest doing such a build, and
that can be fixed without making too much of a mess of the existing code
base, that would be something beneficial for sure.
