 I apologize for the mistake. I guess I am confused. I installed openbabel2
 (verified from shell history), and the error message points to
 openbabel-3.1.1 (path is to /opt/local/openbabel-3.1.1).

 ...

 I removed openbabel2 - this port still doesn't work. However, uninstalling
 openbabel2 and installing openbabel works.

 version of the former is 3.1.1 whereas the latter is 2.4.1.
