Comment (by ssandrews):

 Problem solved. Rather than "sudo port install sphinx", run "sudo port
 install py310-sphinx" or whatever Python you're using. Then "sudo port
 select --set sphinx py310-sphinx". After doing this, sphinx will run as
 expected.
