 Renee -- I am sorry I missed your post.  I just tried upgrading
 py39-matplotlib and the upgrade failed with the same error.  I needed to
 use the workaround to get it to link properly by specifying the clang-9.0
 compiler.

 I created a new ticket -- See #65555
