 Ah, thanks for pointing that out! We probably don't need to be attempting
 to apply a patch for 8.8p1 to 8.9p1.

 Anyway, that makes sense why it errors out (though perhaps less sense why
 it functioned on Monterey where I tested it personally). I think I still
 have a system with El Capitan I can dig up and see about omitting the
 patch parameters to the Portfile to test, though others are welcome to
 give it a go as well, it may take me some time to get to that system to
 try it personally.
