 Me too, on macOS Monterey 12.6 also. Symptoms observed on first `sudo port
 selfupdate` after 2.8.0 released. Symptoms not observed in a `sudo port -v
 selfupdate` immediately after.

 And are ownerships on the named directory and its contents in fact
 correct, after the second `port selfupdate`? Yes:
