New description:

 Instructions from portfile do not work if MPICH is built with
 {{{+gforker}}}, since there is no {{{mpirun}}}. Perhaps either symlinking
 should be done to {{{mpiexec}}} instead, or at least there should be a
 warning.

 I initially thought something mysteriously broken my MPICH installation :)
