 A patch was graciously provided by John Gilbert, and was just applied via
 the following commit:

 https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/commit/af7177a0cf9d0e57066b7664f6b0131d3ceaf460

 However, I'm seeing an unrelated link error due to missing symbol
 `_memrchr`, at least locally on 10.12. So leaving this open for now, to
 see whether that also occurs on the buildbots.
