 The instructions for patching ports in macports is lacking.
 No option to install locally.
 No option to point port to install an older or different version.
 No information on how to manually install a port in conjunction and
 register into Macports.
 I was able to build the port manually with comment 5's solution, to find
 that the instructions for applying the diff not working.
 I need more details from Macports on how to apply diff patches to their
 ports.

 I also find it amusing that instead of fixing the port and closing the
 issue, the have left this issue open for years.
