 my best guess for this right now is that autotools is not using pkg-
 config’s info for the cross build because it is cross-compiling.

 we might set the build macine to be an x86_64 system on arm64 during the
 cross to get past this, if there is not a proper fix.

 I think muniversal 1.1 has an option to do this.
