 every once in a while we trigger a "dependency loop" with an update of
 some kind, where port A depends on port B, which depends on port C, but
 port C depends on port A.

 So, loop.

 Looks like that is what you have here. We usually can sort these out once
 we know about them, thanks -- one of us, Josh, seems to spot these loops
 at a glance. For the rest of us, it takes a bit more pondering how it is
 happening.
