 Good sleuthing.

 Usually the arch setting would be in the CXX or C flags, and added to the
 link that way.

 the link line is supposed to be something like:

 (COMPILER) (C_or_CXXFLAGS) (LDFLAGS) source_file

 So perhaps the 'fix' is to get the archs out of the LDFLAGS completely.
