 P.S.  Newer versions of `star` will build using `smake` but you must use a
 newer version of `smake` than provided by Macports.  I have updated
 `smake` to the latest version (version 1.6) and have submitted a PR.  See
 https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/18655
