 In main.log, the operative command at the error is `xgcc`.  I do not know
 how to examine the complete expansion of `xgcc`, but my guess is that it
 includes `--with-ld=${prefix}/bin/ld-classic`.  If you can confirm that,
 this would prove that the two different options are both applied in the
 same command.
