 Updating the CLT and doing 'port selfupdate' did the trick.  It took a
 long while to finish building everything, but it did finish successfully
 and emacs executes correctly.

 I hope this wasn't just noise and provided some useful feedback.  Thank
 you to all of you for your help with this.
