 On a separate note: We should probably double-check that this port is
 pulling in the optimal version of the crate for `libgit2`.

 Perhaps it's already fine, and the `iconv` issues are due to something
 else. But since we're still spinning on this, it would help to step back,
 and verify the fundamentals...
