Comment:

 You use `sudo` to start the `port` command as the `root` user, which gives
 it the ability to immediately drop privileges to the `macports` user. It
 uses this unprivileged `macports` user for most things so that port build
 systems cannot inadvertently (or intentionally) mess with things outside
 of the build directory.
