 It looks like it did not like a mixture of archaic C compiler with the
 bleeding-edge gfortran (this combo has failed on many other instances). I
 am just now rerunning the build, but it is well past a breakage point.
 Given that we use gfortran from gcc14 anyway, I guess there is zero sense
 in allowing Xcode gcc here.
