 The above issue, filed in 2021, in which a user was trying to use this
 program on an older system, was closed without fixing anything. So the
 first step, if you want this to work on older systems, is to gain
 agreement from the developers that they want that too and will accept PRs
 to do that. If they have no interest in older systems and will not accept
 such PRs there's no point spending time developing the fixes.
