 Could you please provide more details on the rationale behind changing the
 default variant to +quartz?

 We encountered a compilation issue in an application we distribute after
 this change. The issue stems from /opt/local/include/X11/Xlib.h in the
 +quartz variant missing functions like XChangeGC (older version?), which
 are required for our software.
