 on the "very ambitious" front, a project has started to try to reverse
 engineer the entire suite of Cocoa frameworks, including CoreText, here:

 https://cocotron.org


 and the Darling project (think of it as basically WINE for MacOS apps) has
 inhaled that for their compatibility layer:

 https://github.com/darlinghq/darling-cocotron/tree/master


 and there is a CoreText implementation in there, although it does not seem
 to have the function you are missing above, and I see that many of the
 functions are implemented as simply polyfilled stubs.

 So an industrious individual might take that and find some way to make it
 work on 10.4 and 10.5.
