 On my 10.5 Leopard PPC system, I am NOT seeing this error, and cmake is
 currently working just fine.

 So -- something is inconsistent.

 I had built several hundred ports on that LeopardPPC system with the
 gcc14/libgcc14 setup before committing the PR...
