 And I'm not quite sure how to arrange that since the insertion of the
 variables into the file is handled by the configure script using code
 generated by autoconf. We use `AC_CONFIG_FILES` which uses `AC_SUBST`. The

 Variables.html documentation of AC_SUBST] doesn't mention any escaping
 being performed so I think we would have to do the escaping ourselves
 manually in the configure script, assigning the escaped values to new
 variables, and using those escaped variable names in port_autoconf.tcl.in
 instead.
