 @richarddray, never mind.  I think I got it.  Comparing Ken's config.log
 to yours, this shows up and is unexpected:

 I will need to look into this.  It looks like libbz2 is supposed to be a
 plugin for libnetcdf, not a hard link as shown here.  So, missing
 dependency, but the context is not right.  Hmmm.
