 Apparently so.  Ken and Ryan have correctly identified that user home
 directories on this machine go through sym links.  My guess is that this
 really is the source of this particular problem.  For myself, I can look
 at a workaround.

 The lingering question is, should support for this rare special case (sym
 linked home directory) be added to Macports for general application?
