 For the traitlets issue [https://trac.macports.org/ticket/69244] I was
 able to just go back to the older version of traitlets from Macports.  (I
 downloaded the 5.9 portfile) and that was a good workaround.

 So, I'm still using 5.9 but as of yesterday, with an upgrade in jupyter
 (-lab?  Notebook?  some other piece?)  I can get notebook to open.

 so I don't think that this is the same as the few week old one that you
 mentioned.
