 I was just letting you know that you can consider this resolved from my
 point of view. The problem was that I used time machine to move data and
 applications from an intel based mac to an m1 mac which caused the failure
 to install mysql8.   I'm a relative novice at using Macports (having not
 used it in at least 5 years).  So the preference pane switches are just
 easier for me to use going forward rather than looking up command line
 statements. Thank you for the guidance.
