 I get exactly the same errors using a Macports distribution based on
 py312. For me, the error started when `port upgrade outdated` installed
 the latest version of py312-trailets @5.14.1_0, released a few days ago.
 The error goes away when I revert to the previous version of
 py312-traitlets @5.9.0_0.
